Osteoporosis (Brittle Bones)

Osteoporosis is a condition in which bones have become fragile and therefore are more prone to fractures and breaks.

Women are more likely to suffer from osteoporosis than men.  Some of the risk factors that increase the chances of acquiring osteoporosis are:

  • Gender
  • Age
  • Family history
  • Being small and thin
  • Smoking
  • Low sex hormones
  • Diet
  • Alcohol
  • Some medicines (for example steroids)

It is a silent disease and is often only apparent when a break or fracture occurs.

Osteoporosis is treatable with medicines and lifestyle change.

There is a test for osteoporosis which measures the bone mineral density.  This is commonly called a DEXA scan.

Rheumatologists specialise in the management of osteoporosis.
